Christmas in Mannheim – 4 weeks long 25 November - 23 December 2009, daily from 11:00 – 21:00
Mannheim’s Christmas market is one of Germany’s biggest and best, attracting many thousands of visitors each year. The Mannheim Christmas market is centrally located, offering Christmas flair all around the historic water tower (Wasserturm) and right beside the equally historic Jugendstil gardens.
Children will enjoy merry-go-rounds, a giant wheel and a children’s railway as well as mini scooters. A stroll along narrow lanes known by romantic names such as Engelsgasse (Angel’s Lane) or Nikolausstrasse (St Nicolas’s Street) or through Christkindl-Platz (Christ Child Square) is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit.
Around 200 booths have been lovingly decorated to look like little wooden houses where visitors will find a huge selection of: Christmas decorations, some of which are collectors’ items; lamps and leather goods, woolen hats and mittens, wax candles, scarves, jewelry, tin signs, picture frames, children’s toys, handcrafts made from paper, ceramics or wood. There are some charity stands offering homemade cookies or jam, or handcrafts, in aid of good causes. There are forms for making Christmas cookies, there are Moroccan almond cookies and yummy Dresden Stollen, a sweet yeast bread with raisins, candied fruit and sometimes a roll of marzipan in the center, and hand-made chocolate truffles. There’s also plenty of snack foods: steak or sausages, local and international dishes, sweets, candy floss, mulled wine and more.
You'll find a daily program of seasonal musical entertainment on the stage in front of the Wasserturm where local choirs, schools, music and dance groups perform.
The Mannheim Christmas market is easily reached from the highway, or it is only about 5 minutes’ walk from Mannheim’s central railway station.
